What do you think of when you remember your first time at Boat Rock? For many of you there are probably a few key words or phrases that may be bouncing around in your head right now, such as: “frustration”, “disappointment”, “shame”, “blood”, “tears”, or even the more expressive and slightly more aggressive “ahhrrrr!” Scared yet? Use it. But there are also other words that come to mind, like: “excitement”, “exhilaration”, “awe”, “beauty”, “encouraging”, or the all encompassing “freakin’ awesome!” Boat Rock is simply amazing no matter how you look at it. Its climbing, location, and history are all worthy of recognition.
Boat Rock consists of dozens of large granite boulders ready and waiting to grind your skin and polish your technique. The Boat is not for those of fair skin. The granite at Boat Rock is extremely sharp and more often than not you’ll find yourself clinging desperately to tiny crystals on the face of the slabs that will instantly dish out painful lessons for even the slightest error. It’s this type of punishment that has earned it the notorious nickname of “Blood” Rock among some of the locals. Aside from the granite, the bouldering offers climbers the chance to work on a variety of techniques for several different types of climbing from slabs and crimps to overhangs and cracks. There are even a few bolts scattered around for a couple top rope routes.
When you first park in the small parking area, you won’t get too far before spotting the huge boulders of Easy Crack and the surrounding area. It’s almost unbelievable to see boulders of this scale with an Atlanta address. Boat Rock is nestled in a fairly quiet area off Fulton Industrial Road and has managed to survive the area’s push for suburban development due in large part to the joint efforts of local climbers and the Southeastern Climbers Coalition. In 2002, the SCC was actually able to raise an astounding $100,000 to buy the property and forever keep it out the hands of developers. Boat Rock has now become the first step for many climbers in the Atlanta area in getting out of the gyms and getting their hands on some real rock.
Boat Rock may be tough, but don’t let that keep you from experiencing what it’s like to thrown down on some good ol’ southern granite. Boat Rock is hands down the best place to climb in the Atlanta area and everyone should give it chance.
