Whether you are going on vacation or just getting away for a day or two, there are specific things you need to consider before boarding your dog. Our pets are like our kids, at least to most of us, and where we leave them and with whom are very important to us. You certainly would not leave your children with someone you do not know or trust. We have to feel very trustworthy of those that will be put in charge of our precious pets as well. Find someone in your local area that you trust in the care of your pet family member.
If you are going to board your dog, be sure to not just call but also go to the kennel where you are considering leaving your dog. Interview the caregivers at that site, request a complete tour and ask all concerning questions about their care, health requirements and the cleanliness of the facility.
Talk to several kennels and facilities before you make a decision. Recommendations from family, friends and even your veterinarian can help you in choosing the best fit facility where you will leave your dog for any period of time. Don’t choose a place according to price but make sure your decision is based on the best and cleanest place to leave your dog.
Find out the requirements of the kennels as well. A facility with little requirements is exhibiting a red flag as to inappropriate care for your pooch. Find out what vaccinations are necessary as well as what you need to bring into the kennel with your dog. If your dog requires vaccines, at least that would mean that other residents there will also be protected and pose no threat to your dog.
Do some research on the staff that will be caring for your dog. Is it someone very educated in the care of dogs or just someone who just considers it a “job”? Being the concerned pet parent you are, visit the prospective kennel several times and meet with the actual staff that will be providing care to your dog. You need to feel assured that your dog will get appropriate loving care in your absence.
Find out the schedule at the kennel. What are the feeding times, what are the play times, quiet times, potty times and so forth? Do they give medications as needed, feed the food you provide, sleep in their own beds, etc.? When considering any kennel, make a list of questions and concerns you have, ask each and every kennel you visit along with costs, staff and other facts so that you can make a final and educated decision as to where you will trust your dogs care in your absence.
You will also want to be sure the kennel has a copy of your pets medical records and any pertinent emergency information should they need to contact you for any reason. Provide all the contact information that you can so you are always available should the kennel have a question or concern about your dog. As you want to rest assured your dog is in good hands, it is imperative that the staff knows they can and will contact you for any reason should they need to. What is really nice about a lot of newer kennels is that they have webcams available in the areas where the dogs stay and play so that you can check in on your best friend at any time. That has got to be very comforting to know your dog and the caregivers are just a click away while you may be miles away.
