BMI Christian Music Awards Held in Nashville April 4
Broadcast Music, Inc.’s BMI Christian Music Awards were held at BMI’s Music Row offices on Monday night, April 4. The American performing right organization, which represents more than 475,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in all genres of music and more than 6.5 million works, honored the genre’s most-played songs. BMI’s main lobby was transformed into a gala dining room and performing stage when the annual invitation-only event honored the songwriters and publishers of the past year’s most performed Christian rock, contemporary Christian, inspirational, southern and urban gospel songs on U.S. Christian radio.
Hosted by Jody Williams, Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations, along with Director, Writer/Publisher Relations Beth Mason and Senior Director, Writer/Publisher Relations Thomas Cain, the ceremony also recognized the BMI Christian Song, Songwriter and Publisher of the Year. BMI has represented the most popular and beloved music from around the world for 70 years. Starting with a reception at 6PM followed by a fabulous dinner of steak, shrimp and chicken, the night concluded with the awards program.
TobyMac shared his second consecutive Christian Songwriter of the Year crown with southern gospel favorite Rodney Griffin and pop-savvy rockers Needtobreathe’s Bo Rinehart. “What Faith Can Do” earned Christian Song of the Year honors for its creative team. Written by Scott Krippayne and published by Pirk Music, the song was recorded by alt-rock outfit Kutless. With five songs in the most-performed list, Universal Music Publishing Group was named Christian Publisher of the Year for the fourth consecutive year.
During the ceremony, Triumphant Quartet, Sidewalk Prophets, and Song of the Year winner Scott Krippayne each performed award-winning songs.
The ceremony also included a tribute to late Gospel Music Association (GMA) co-founder Don Butler, who died earlier this year. Butler served as the GMA’s board executive director from 1976 to 1991.
