The HBO series ‘Big Love’ has come to a close, and the shocking finale may leave fans a bit unsettled. If you missed any of the the ‘Big Love’ finale Sunday night (March 20), you can catch up right here. Be warned: the show sure went out with a bang!
‘Big Love’ Season 5 Finale: Did You See It Coming?
During the final episode of the HBO drama series ‘Big Love’, which stars Bill Paxton as the head of a polygamist family in Utah, many loose ends are tied up for loyal fans of the five-season soap opera. Lately, the first wife, Barb Henrickson, had been searching for something outside the family to complete her. Though she had finally decided to take the plunge against Bill’s wishes, literally, by being baptised into a new church, she backed out at the last moment. Barb ran out of the baptism, and returned to her family church just as Bill was delivering Easter Sunday service to his congregation.
Margene Henrickson, Bill’s youngest wife, also seemed to be searching for something more than plural marriage and child-rearing alone could provide her. During the ‘Big Love’ finale, which was both the Season 5 and series finale, Margene explored missionary work on a medical boat. Bill was surprised, but it was second wife Nicki Henrickson to firmly voice her opposition to the idea. Given Bill’s legal troubles and looming prison term for bigamy and statuatory rape charges (for marrying Margene when she was 16, unbeknownst to him as Margie lied about her age), her slow-boat-to-salvation idea was put on hold.
Speaking of the embattled Sen. Bill Henrickson, he helped ensure the ‘Big Love’ series finale would be something to talk about by putting a bill forward to legalize polygamy. This resulted in an outpouring of support from Juniper Creek compound members and polygamists from all over Utah, who turned out to his Easter sermon in droves and applauded him on arrival. Unfortunately, the jubilation would be short lived.
‘Big Love’ Series Finale: Series Ends With A Death In The Family
In the final moments of the ‘Big Love’ Season 5 finale (series finale), Bill Henrickson was shot dead by a neighbor. The reason? Bill has given his family too much help when they needed it, making him feel like less of a man. As he lay dying outside of his home, with his three wives surrounding him, he asked Barb to say a blessing for him, which she did.
In a time-lapse scene, eleven months have passed sinced Bill Henrickson was shot and killed. The sister wives are holding down the fort, and Margene is sporting a short new haircut. Nikki and Barb chide her to call to check in more “this time”, as she prepares to head out on another mission. Though there is sadness, the ‘Big Love’ finale ended with a warm embrace between the wives, and the credits rolled with the show’s original song, “God Only Knows What I’d Be Without You” by the Beach Boys.
