Within a two mile radius there are two bakeries on Cheshire Bridge Road that are totally different from each other. One thing that can be guaranteed is that the pastries, desserts and breads are delicious at both of places. On the north side you have International bakery that is located in a small strip mall with an insurance company and a Dominos pizza. On the south side located immediately pass Life nightclub is Rhodes bakery. It is in a small shop, if you are not careful you will pass right by it.
International bakery has an arrangement of desserts in the case no matter what time you walk in. You will see an assortment of cookies, tarts and cakes.There is a different flavored cannoli that is featured daily. The espresso flavored is the best. On the back side of the counter there are savory pies like spinach, cheese and onions that are all tasty. You can get them heated or to take home by the slice or whole. Wedding cookies and mini croissant rolls are always available as you walk in to purchase by the dozen. International bakery also sells kosher products like falafel mix. Specialty cakes are made to order daily as well as any desserts that you do not see in the case except for profiteroles. International is open every day except Sunday from 8 to 5pm.
Rhodes Bakery has been open since 1930. They are closed Sunday and Monday. They are only opened Tuesday thru Saturday from 8 to 5pm. In the mornings, the display cases are filled with different cakes, pies, cookies and breads but if you stop by after 2pm you will not see much. Rhodes sells out of many of their products in the morning hours. While visiting, make sure you take the time to try the cinnamon raisin buns and cheese straws. The buns and straws will remind you of your childhood. They are two items that you do not see on menus at many bakeries anymore. Rhodes bakery has specialty cakes and pies made to order. You can always go in and purchase a variety of breads and buns for any occasion. The quality of their products is the reason they have been open for as long as they have.
Even though these two bakeries are less than two miles from each other, they are present because they both have unique styles of baking. International has a variety of items from all around the world. Rhodes is more old school southern baking. Both are successful in this area and to be honest if you visit one, definitely take the time to go and visit the other because there is something delicious going on at the each of them.
