Another significant event occurred at the Southern California German Shepherd Rescue (SCGSR). It started out simply enough … the Ustream family were enjoying the daily antics of the remaining pups from Anke’s litter, who were now about 6 months old and along came two new rescued pups.
They were given names by the viewers; the female became Baby and her brother Angel. Sadly, only Baby survived, Angel succumbed to the many parasites that invaded his (and his sisters) young emaciated 5-week-old bodies. Angel went quickly in the arms of a SCGSR volunteer and Baby lost her brother and playmate.
Baby managed to thrive and was joined by other rescued puppies. Along came Roxy and Gus who were rescued from various circumstances. They were just a little bit older, but just as adorable and wonderful pups. They became suitable playmates for baby.
Again, tragedy befell one of Baby’s playmates. Due to the negligence of an all-night emergency clinic, which he was rushed to, Gus succumbed not too long after he was taken. The problem was a strangulated hernia, which the clinic failed to reduce. Hearts broke on the Ustream network. That puppy should not have died.
Roxy was a little fighter. She stayed around to steal the hearts of even the most hardhearted viewer. Baby enjoyed playing and romping with her. They became a cute pair to watch. Baby loved all the doggies, large and small in Marcy’s home (the rescues founder).
Suddenly, Roxy did not seem to be herself and it was discovered she had contracted distemper. Distemper is a dreadful disease that puppies are usually safe from once they receive their series of immunizations. It is unknown why Roxy got sick, as it appeared she had the correct shots to keep her safe. All the treatment couldn’t save her. Marcy quickly adopted Roxy so she would not have to die a homeless pup.
Marcy has set up a special fund on her rescue’s website for those that can’t afford the needed immunization required for their puppies. They will help many avoid this heartbreak. Tears still fill many eyes when thinking of Roxy, including this writer.
Again Baby lost a playmate. She had to rely on the big dogs of Marcy’s pack (personal dogs and foster dogs) in order to satisfy her puppy moods.
