The World. 196 countries and plenty of history within them. The last thing you would think is portraying a country as a single person, right? WRONG! You have never seen an Anime like this one! Axis Powers Hetalia, is a Japanese Anime created by Hidekazu Himaruya that portrays the countries as people. From America to Russia, they all have personalities that relate to the countries downfalls and achievements, causing comedy and mischief on a whole new level. So far, over 40 countries have been personified and a large sum of them have Human names. Himayura originally created APH as a webcomic, which grew from there after he decided to turn his works into a Manga. Immediately following the English translations that Tokyopop released in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, they have topped the New York Times manga best seller list. On January 24 2009, the true fandom began when Himayura launched the first official season of APH.
Axis Powers Hetalia takes place in the WW1-WW2 era and focuses around the protagonist Italy (Feliciano Vargas), a flirtatious, silly, and somewhat dumb young man, who strives to make friends left and right. After his grandfather, The Great Roman Empire passes away, Italy has been under the control of various countries, and longs to be his own nation with his own command. Not too later into the first episode, he meets his new ally and best friend, Germany (Ludwig) who is searching for Rome’s ancestor. Germany decides to take Italy captive, soon realizing he is ridiculously useless, and tries his best to rid himself of this nuisance. Not long after, they meet their new ally, Japan, thus forming the Axis Alliance. Throughout the the first season, the Allies in WW2: America, Russia, France, England, and China, all try to take down the Axis, proving to fail miserably. Aside from the Anime being extremely hilarious, it is also educational, showing the true history through little intermissions spoken by a female narrator.
The series is up to 98 episodes, each one running for only 5 minutes each. Episodes 1-52 have already been released in 2 seasons on DVD as an English dub and of course, a choice of the original Japanese audio as well. “Hetalia: Paint it, White!!” was the first feature-length film adaptation of Hetalia, which was released on June 5th, 2010 in Japan and released in America on January 26th, 2011. The movie has yet to be English subbed and runs for approximately 1 hour and 7 minutes. Along with the series and movie, there are also character CDs and drama CDs that have been released to the public. Each character/country has 2 solo songs, including their own versions of the signature song in the series: “Maru kaite Chikyuu”, who was originally sang by Italy.
APH is mostly suitable for teens, considering the fact that younger children might not understand the jokes they make from history. There are also minor suggestive themes from time to time and in the English dubbed version, there is minor language, but nothing too severe. APH is a fun and exciting Anime that is growing in popularity all over the globe. This series is recommended for anyone wanting to watch something hilarious and extremely random.
