Fiction, essay and poetry submissions are now being accepted for the 2011 AHWS Writing Contest, sponsored by the Appalachian Heritage Writers Symposium, and a deadline of June 1, 2011 has been announced for all entries.
Monetary prizes will be awarded to winners in both adult and youth categories at the close of the two-day symposium, which is set for June 17-18 at Southwest Virginia Community College in Richlands, Virginia.
The contest is open to the public and entrants do not have to attend the symposium to be eligible. Winners not in attendance will receive their awards by mail, according to announcement from the AHWS committee.
There is an entry fee of $10.00 per submission in the adult (post high school) categories with no limit on the number of entries. There is no entry fee for the youth categories, 6th to 8th grade and 9th to 12 grade, but submissions are limited to one per genre: fiction, essay and poetry.
AHWS representatives are currently coordinating visits to area schools to further explain the youth writing contest and to encourage student submissions, a committee spokesman said.
Award amounts per genre for adults will be $250 for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third. Youth awards per genre will be $75 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third.
This year all entries must be submitted electronically. Entry forms may be found on the AHWS blog at: http://appheritagewritersym.wordpress.com along with detailed contest guidelines and other information about the symposium.
Entry forms must be completed and mailed, along with entry fees for adult submissions, to Pauline Taylor, Appalachian Heritage Writers Symposium, King
Community Center, PO Box SWCC, Richlands, VA 24641.
Checks should be payable to SWCC Foundation. Forms and/or fees must be received before electronic submissions will be sent to the contest judges, according to the guidelines.
The symposium and writing contest is sponsored by Southwest Virginia Community College, Appalachian Arts Center, and Appalachian Authors Guild, a chapter of the Virginia Writers Club.
