For some strange reason, American Idol is keeping the Motown song list for the top 11 contestants a secret, for tonight’s performances.
As Motown is, and always will be, the best music recorded, the contestants had better step it up and make NO mistakes. Moreover, no remakes please, only originals.
This could get ugly.
Here are the songs I would pick for the contestants, if I could:
As I am not quite as enamored with Lauren as the judges and voters seem to be, I would hope that she would sing something that would show off what the judges are saying she has. Something by the 5th Dimension, like Stone Soul Picnic, would show off that little country twang Lauren sometimes has.
I hope that Casey will stay away from the screaming this week and do something like Signed, Sealed, Delivered, by Stevie Wonder, using that pleasant voice Jennifer says she likes to hear from him.
Since Paul is currently my favorite to win, he can sing anything. I would love to hear him do Shake Him, Wake Me (when it’s over). I’d love to see what he could do with this classic Four Tops tune.
Pia could easily do a Supremes song, even though Diana Ross is the absolute best female ever, Pia’s the only one who could tackle one of her forever timeless songs.
The Adam Lambert of American Idol Season 10, James should do Michael Jackson or even a Jackson 5 song, since he has 5 times the talent as many artists that are popular today. Rock with you is one of my favorites from Michael’s earlier days.
Haley could also nail a 5th Dimension song like Blowin’ Away, although she will have to be twice as good to avoid the bottom 3 for the third week in a row.
I would love to hear Jacob do Everybody Plays the Fool. It is a song that I never tire of and I can still remember the day I bought the ’45. Whenever my friends and I would hear this on the radio, we’d run down the street to show our other friends, just like in the movie, That Thing You Do.
Thia should shake it up with a Martha Reeves and the Vandellas song, like I’m Ready for Love, my personal favorite of this all girl group. Thia’s fans are ready to hear her do something upbeat.
My guess is that Stefano can do no wrong among the young female voters this year, but I think Stefano would sound incredible with a Marvin Gaye or an Al Green song. Matt Giraud nailed Marvin’s Let’s Get it On in Season 8. I believe Stefano will be able to do that one almost as well, or maybe Green’s Let’s Stay Together.
I got tons of grief for saying this a few years back, but I think Scotty’s voice is perfect for God Didn’t Make Little Green Apples. My second choice for Scotty’s unique tone would be a Jerry Butler song like Only the Strong Survive. How about Keeper of the Castle, from the Four Tops, whose leader was a baritone.
I want Naima to stick around for a long time. I think she has something different, something unique, and I hope she picks something different like My Mistake, from the perfect combination of the Supremes and the Temptations.
Unfortunately, the first time I gritted my teeth during Idol’s Motown theme during Hollywood week, was when some of the girls did not know some of the lyrics of Supremes’ songs.
How is THAT even possible? If I mentored the contestants tonight, I would simply say:
Do NOT screw these songs up!
There are many songs I would but my top two Motown picks for the girls if they could handle them, would be Aquarius and Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.
For the guys, I would choose It’s the Same Old Song and I Can’t Help Myself.
How about Naima and James doing a duet of Aquarius, because I love the ending part with Bill Davis including this line, “I want ya to sing along with the 5th Dimension”.
Aw, mercy, mercy me, it is going to be a good night or a bad one. We’ll have to wait and see.
