I first want to start this article off by printing a correction, yesterday I referenced “xta developers”..it should have read “xda developers”, the link was correct just a typo. I apologize to the great folks at XDA.
Android, the mobile operating system that is changing everything we know and think about smart phones. Open source means light in all the dark places of source code, the code that is the foundation of every single program, including operating systems. Keeping Android “open” through the Android Open Source Project, means that anyone with programming knowledge, mainly Linux, and Java, can have full access to the source code and modify it anyway they want. The Android O/S being installed on more and more phones provided a perfect opportunity to customize our devices in ways never thought possible until now. From there “rooting” was born.
Rooting a particular device, simply put, means modifying who has default access to all commands and files within the operating system. A better way of putting it, our phones can be customized to our liking, the look of it, the feel of it, the applications we wish to have on them. When we unbox our phones, we are forced to accept the phones as they are, as someone else thinks they should be, rooting follows the spirit of the open source as imagined by the Android Developers years ago when the O/S was developed.
It needs to said here, that phone manufactures and cell providers are not as enthusiastic out rooting as us as owners are, in fact it voids most warranties, so proceed with caution. Rooting your device also has some elements of risk to your device if done incorrectly. Incorrectly rooting your device is just as simple as not following instructions word for word, letter by letter. The benefits of rooting far outweighs any minor risk involved, because these aftermarket developers, (often working on their own time for no pay except donations), know how to help us make our phones faster, more streamlined, less unwanted, unused applications taking up valuable space and processor resources. They hard work also allows us to make the look and feel, color schemes, icon images, ect, more to our personal liking. Making our phones actually ours, they fit our personality and our lifestyles.
Roanoke and the surrounding areas has such diverse cultures and personalities, a small melting pot of variety and colorful expression, we show it with our wardrobe, our vehicles, our music, why wouldn’t we show our individuality with our mobile devices? When we root we can.
