Florida State held their pro day workout on Wednesday and quarterback Christian Ponder was the main attraction to numerous scouts. Among the scouts in attendance was San Francsisco 49ers national scout Matt Malaspina, according to Matt Barrows.
The pro day was closed off to the public, so not much information from Ponder’s performance has been made public. However, according to WarChant (of Rivals.com), they tweeted that Ponder started off his day pretty well.
Ponder continues to throw screens, curls, out and ups. Arm looks sharp.
Ponder only participated in the throwing drills on Wednesday, but his receiver wasn’t a teammate. Since FSU didn’t have any senior wideouts and NFL players weren’t allowed to participate due to the lockout, Ponder’s agent Jimmy Sexton had his client and former 49ers receiver Isaac Bruce sub in as the receiver for the drills.
According to Andrew Carter of the Orlando Sentinel, Ponder’s throws featured a lot of “zip”, which might have just elevated his stock.
Ponder is scheduled to have private workouts with at least nine teams, but he won’t publicly name them.
The 49ers are in need of a quarterback and with a huge uncertainty surrounding the offseason, the emphasis on getting a quarterback in the draft has grown. Ponder might be a second round pick now with his performance on pro day. Despite having had a shoulder injury in 2009, Ponder posesses great footwork and a very accurate arm. His Senior Bowl and NFL Combine performances make him a very hot prospect.
In a West Coast Offense, Ponder could be a perfect fit for the 49ers. In my opinion, he might be one of the most “NFL-ready” quarterbacks in the draft. Having a 49ers scout present on Wednesday shows that the 49ers do have some interest in him.
The 49ers had been quiet in terms of making their visits with prospects public with only a known visit by head coach Jim Harbaugh to TCU quarterback Andy Dalton’s pro day. This week, the 49ers have shown a little bit of what their draft board might look like.
On Friday, the 49ers are scheduled to have a private workout with Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The strong-armed quarterback is projected to be a second round pick but might get drafted sooner if he continues to impress scouts. He had a solid NFL Combine showing and if the 49ers like him, they might draft him in the second round or even move up into the first round to get him.
Also, the league’s top pass rusher will have a meeting with the 49ers. Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller is making a trip throughout the country meeting with diffrent teams and the 49ers are one of the teams on his itinerary. If the 49ers are fortunate enough to have Miller available at the #7 spot, I don’t think the team will hesitate the draft him. The only other player that should be ranked higher on the team’s draft board is LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson. However, in recent weeks, Peterson’s stock has risen and he could be gone within the first few picks.
