Mar 22, 2011 – The Broad Stage 2011/12 calendar of events was announced today by its founding director, Dale Franzen. Invested on establishing The Broad Stage as a world class venue for the performing arts and film, as a “creative sandbox” in Santa Monica for Los Angeles’s artists, and as a community source of arts education, the season’s program is richly diverse. Consider some of its highlights:
July 14, 2011 will see Israeli keyboardist and composer Idan Raichel collaborating with Grammy-winning neo-soul diva India.Arie in their only Los Angeles performance. The pair was praised by their audiences recently at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in Oslo and at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
October 2, 2011 will delight with the music and dance of the Yuval Ron Ensemble. This group of Jewish, Arab, and Christian artists led by Oscar winning composer Yuval Ron delves into the Middle East’s cultural beats and is an inspiration for our 21stcentury Los Angeles – another melting pot of cultures and dialogues.
November 13-27, 2011 will welcome London’s Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, this time performing William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, in what will also be the company’s first U.S. tour.
January 19 – February 12, 2012 will present Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, starring Oscar winner Helen Hunt. For this engagement The Broad Stage will be physically transformed, allowing for only 325 seats for the audience and utilizing the boxes and balconies to create the play’s every town USA.
April 12 – 22, 2012 will welcome In Paris, with ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov and Anna Sinyakina. In Paris will be performed entirely in Russian with projected English translations. It is based on a 1940 short story by Russian writer Ivan Bunin about a former general in the White Russian Army and a much younger beauty, whose lives collide in 1930s Paris. This will be the U.S. premiere of this new play, presented by the Baryshnikov Arts Center and the Dmitry Krymov Laboratory.
April 29, 2012 will see a touch of Latin with music from Argentina by Antonio Lysy. The cellist extraordinaire recorded the album Antonio Lysy at The Broad: Music from Argentina at The Broad Stage. The album included the song Pampas, written by Argentinian Lilo Schifrin. Pampas won the 2010 Latin Grammy for Best Classical Contemporary Composition. Lysy’s performance will feature tango superstars Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo.
The season will also include a celebration of Jazz with performances by Pat Metheny, Joshua Redman, Hiromi, and the Brad Mehldau Trio. The Broad will transform itself into an opera house for its Opera Arias nights, and it will create a new way for children to experience music during its Saturday Morning Mash-Ups. Additionally, The Broad will see the Los Angeles premiere of National Geographic Live which will bring to the stage living witnesses of natural wonders, environmental perils and human connections that will affect and inspire the audience.
