The San Diego State Aztecs made it to the March Madness college basketball tournament last season, losing to Tennessee in the first round. Coming into the 2010-11 season, the Aztecs felt they finally had what it took to compete nationally. San Diego State had won 51 games heading into the new season but had never won an NCAA March Madness college basketball tournament game (0-6).
That should change this season. San Diego State broke lots of records in the 2010-11 season. The Aztecs started the season with 20 consecutive wins, the best start ever for a San Diego State team. They lost to BYU and peeled off seven more wins before losing to BYU again. It seemed like the Cougars were kryptonite for San Diego State.
The Aztecs finally shook that off in the finals of the Mountain West tournament with a dominating win over BYU, 72-54. The victory gave San Diego State the MWC title and the best record in team history. The win probably improved the Aztecs seeding to a No. 2 spot while dropping their rivals in BYU to a No. 3 at best. It was a record year for San Diego State, who scored wins over St. Mary’s, Gonzaga, Wichita State and Cal. It’s now time to see if they can make a run in the Big Dance.
Final Record: 32-2, 14-2 Mountain West
Predicted Seed: 2
San Diego State: 72 BYU: 54 (3/12/2011)
BYU beat San Diego State twice in the regular season and it seemed like they had San Diego State’s number. However, those were the only two losses of the season and San Diego State won when it counted, in the Mountain West title game. Billy White scored 21 points with 12 rebounds and Kawhi Leonard added 20 of his own, beating BYU and the NCAA leading scorer Jimmer Fredette by 18 points.
San Diego State Player to Watch: Kawhi Leonard helped lead San Diego State to the best record in school history. Leonard has 21 double-doubles this season and is averaging 15.3 points and 10.8 rebounds a game.
