After going 14-17 in the 2009-10 season, Bucknell is back in the March Madness college basketball tournament. For those that remember, this is the team that beat Kansas six years ago in the first round of the Big Dance, busting brackets all over the country. Expectations were high coming into the 2010-11 season as the Bison returned their entire starting lineup after finishing last season with eight wins in their final ten games.
Bucknell got off to a rough start in 2010-11 as well. The Bison headed into Christmas with a 6-7 record, things looking bleak. However, after Christmas, Bucknell went 19-1 to finish the season, blowing through the Patriot League, their only loss coming to Army.
Bucknell avenged that sole loss by beating Army in back-to-back games at the end of the season and first round of the Patriot League tournament. They finally blew out Lafayette, 72-57, to advance into the NCAA March Madness tournament. The Bison hope to build upon past success, including the upset of No. 3 Kansas in 2005 and the defeat of No. 8 Arkansas in 2006.
Final Record: 25-8, 13-1 Patriot League
Predicted Seed: 13
Bucknell: 62 Richmond: 61 (1/2/2011)
Bucknell came into Christmas struggling, with a sub-.500 record. After the holiday, they only lost one game for the remainder of the season. One of those wins was against a strong Richmond squad that came into the contest with an 11-3 record. Mike Muscala made a 16-foot turnaround jumper as time expired to give Bucknell the win.
Bucknell Player to Watch: Sophomore Mike Muscala finished the season as the Patriot League’s Player of the Year. The big man led Bucknell with 14.9 points a game while also pulling down 7.4 rebounds and logging 2.0 blocks a game.
