The Belmont Bruins came into the 2009-10 season with a lot of questions. In that year, they relied on freshman phenom Ian Clark to led them to a 19 win season. In the 2010-11 season, the entered with a lot of optimism but I don’t know if anyone expected them to be this good entering the 2011 March Madness college basketball tournament.
Belmont finished the 2010-11 season with 30 wins and a 19-1 Atlantic Sun record. Belmont continued to receive AP votes at the end of the season, the first time in ten years an Atlantic Sun team received votes this late in the season. In the most recent AP Poll, Belmont received nine points, ranking ahead of Gonzaga.
Now, the Belmont Bruins are in the 2011 March Madness NCAA college basketball tournament for the fourth time in six seasons. Belmont lost one game to an inferior Atlantic Sun team in Lipscomb but, outside of that slip up, their losses all came to SEC teams projected to make the NCAA tournament. With a 30-win season, the Bruins will get a more favorable seeding, giving them a good chance at progressing in the tourney.
Final Record: 30-4, 19-1 Atlantic Sun
Predicted Seed: 13
Belmont: 68 East Tennessee State: 58 (2/17/2011)
Belmont swept the 2010-11 season series with East Tennessee State, the only other team in the Atlantic Sun ranked in the RPI Top 100. While this may be the Bruins best win, their best game came against Tennessee on Dec. 23, 2010. The only reason Tennessee won the one-point game was because of a layup with 5.7 seconds left in the game.
Belmont Player to Watch: Last season’s freshman sensation, Ian Clark, is now a veteran and the best player on the team. He leads the team with 12.4 points per game.
