Akron won 24 games in 2009-10 and made it to the CBI tournament at the end of the season. However, the team wanted more and a trip to the March Madness college basketball tournament was all that would make the Zips happy. The team came into 2010-11, three starters short, and needed to rebuild quick if they were to meet those goals.
Following the Zips 66-65 win over Kent State for the Mid-American tournament title, the Zips in-fact reached their goals and found themselves in the Big Dance. Akron last played in the tournament in 2009 and hopes to have some luck as they enter a match against highly favored Notre Dame. It is Akron’s fourth NCAA tournament appearance in the school’s history.
Akron won four games to win the MAC tournament after losing their final two regular season games by a combined 36 points. The team does not have a big-name scorer, but play a team offense where eight players combine to average between 5.1 and 11.9 points a game. Akron fought back from a 12-10 record to win nine of their final 11 games to make the tournament. With Notre Dame on tap, they are just happy to have made it this far.
Final Record: 23-12, 13-7 Mid-American
Akron: 66 Kent State: 65 (3/12/2011)
Akron was one of the favored teams in the MAC in preseason polls but they came into the tournament finale against Kent State as the underdogs. Kent State was the No. 1 seed but Akron knew they could beat them. They knocked them off in January, already. After a hard fought overtime victory, Akron found themselves on top of the conference and in the Big Dance for the fourth time.
Akron Player to Watch: Zeke Marshall is the dominating player that helped lead the Akron Zips to the MAC title and a March Madness bid. The center stands 7-feet tall and blocked four shots to make sure Akron won the tournament final. He ranks fourth in scoring with 8.6 points and second in rebounds, with 4.8, but his blocking average of 2.5 is why Akron is one of the toughest defensive units in the country.
