In the Bible, Ecclesiastes 1:9 says, “There is nothing new under the sun.” So what more could we possibly learn about what Jesus said or didn’t say?
“What has been is what will be. What has been done, will be done again.” According to this scripture, we are doomed to repeat the past. But sometimes the past is worth repeating.
Pastor Will Davis Jr. at Austin Christian Fellowship surely believes that scripture, as his latest book to be released in July, 2011 is titled, “10 Things Jesus never said and why you should stop believing them.”
ACF is a nondenominational church in Austin, Texas. Their founding and senior pastor, Dr. Will Davis Jr. has written many books over the years about prayer, but his latest offering veers from his pinpointed prayer topic to grace and forgiveness.
Dr. Davis’s bio says that for more than sixteen years he has shared the principles of pinpoint prayers with his congregation of more than 1,000 believers, founded on the basic doctrines of the Bible.
Dr. Davis challenges people to pray big—or more specifically, to pray with such focus as to pinpoint their exact needs. Davis is the author of: “Pray Big – the power of pinpoint prayers” (2007), “Pray Big for Your Marriage – the power of praying God’s promises for your relationship” (2008), and “Pray Big for Your Child – the power of praying God’s promises for your child’s life” (2009).
In 2006, missionary Victor Kuligin penned a similarly titled book called, “10 things I wish Jesus never said.” Kuligin said he wrote it so that others would understand that following Jesus Christ isn’t easy.
“The warning I would give is that I cannot endorse everything in it… this would be a much better work if more discernment was exercised over what illustrations he used…,” said Ray Hammond, Christian Book Preview.
Two very different topics: two very similar titles. Dr. Davis’ writing has been reviewed by Christian Book Previews as well, but with quite the different opinion. “Sincere, biblically accurate and interesting,” says Dr. Dennis E. Hensley.
Dr. Davis wrote several other worthy reads available on Amazon and Kindle. Davis is a Baylor University graduate who also holds a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
Will and wife Susie, both Austin natives, have been married since June 1985 and have three children. Susie is also an author, and can be heard daily on the Spirit 105.9 radio station.
